ECO CHURCH NEWS This month the theme is FOOD SECURITY.
The recent events in the Middle East have brought home how important
self-reliance is. Both nationally and community wide. Food Miles have for
a long time been talked about, but now is more relevant. How much food
do you buy with is produced locally in Worcestershire or in the UK?
Do you grow any yourself in your garden or allotment.
Look in your cupboards and assess this. Here are some ideas for buying
locally produced food, which support the local community.
First off: MILK – Bennetts Dairy on our doorstep, delivers excellent milk
and bread from Peter Cooks bakery based in Herefordshire. Bennetts also
produce beef, lamb and pork sausages if you are a meat eater.
Secondly: VEGETABLES – Oxton Organics based in Fladbury do a veg box
delivery service. Or you can pick up veg yourself at The Veg Shed at
The Fold, Bransford.
Thirdly, FARMERS MARKETS: These sell all sorts of things from honey
to cakes, veg and pickles. There is one once a month in the Great Malvern
Priory grounds.
Fourthly: SOME GARDEN CENTRES stock locally produced food too.
If you are a VEGETARIAN there are a large range of UK-produced beans,
grains and other items sold on-line by Hodmedod. You may have other sources
of locally produced food too, or look around for places that grow or sell things.
Or you could grow them yourself in your garden or allotme
