ECO-CHURCH NEWS
Bromwich Road Mission has signed up to BUTTERFLY CONSERVATION’S
Wild Spaces Campaign. We pledge to create in our grounds, a permanent
place for butterflies to feed, breed and shelter. This will involve planting the
correct plants and trees for nectar for butterflies, and food for caterpillars. Some have specific plants
without which they cannot reproduce. And also shelter to pupate (usually in the soil, under fallen
leaves or on plant stems). So new types of plants will be planted in the garden and in the long grass
at the edges of the field.
We are also involved in their Garden Butterfly Survey, in which every year, throughout the whole year,
we record what butterflies (and some day flying moths) we see in our grounds. Butterflies don’t just fly
in the summer. The only season you never used to see them was in winter, but even that has changed
due to climate change! All the data will go onto the database to assess butterfly population changes.
If you see any butterflies or moths when you are at the Mission please let me know the date you saw
them and what species they were. Many thanks.
