“You cannot get through a single day
without having an impact on the world
around you. What you do makes a difference,
and you have to decide what kind of difference you want to make”
Dr Jane Goodall
Last month I shared some thoughts on NET ZERO and why I have
mostly avoided the topic. This month:-
2. Net Zero is probably unattainable for several decades, if at all.
This is a very complex issue and a lot depends on politics, wars, etc.
I feel the UK Government realises there is no quick fix, as it would be difficult
to implement quickly and would cost too much. The date for Net Zero has been
pushed forward to 2050. In all probability I will not be alive by then!
Which means that climate change will continue, as other larger nations produce
vastly more Co2 than we do. So, in the meantime we will have to live with a
chaotic climate as best we can. As individuals, we can do our small bit, by
curbing our excessive consumption of fuel (and goods, but that subject is
for another time), by
- Walking, cycling, taking the bus/train more often
- Take a shower instead of a bath (saves water and heat)
- Turn down the thermostat on your heating by 1degree to save
- energy and money.
- Only boil the kettle with the actual amount of water you need.
- Do you really need all those electrical gadgets?
Are there some you could recycle or pass on?
These are small tweaks that add up over time, especially if lots of people do
them. You may think of some that I haven’t?
Every little helps!
