Eco Church Tips - October

Eco Church Tips

It’s very easy to be discouraged by so many things that need to be

adapted or hanged.  But remember “you can’t do it all”.

If you pick out what you CAN do, however small, it all makes a

difference if lots of people are doing something.

It could be picking up a piece of litter on your daily walk, turning

down your heating by 1 degree, buying locally produced food or car sharing, etc.

It’s up to you!

My next thought- provoking subject is FOOD AND WATER.

This is such a vast subject, with so many things wrong with it,

so I will break it down into small monthly sections.

When you are wandering around the supermarket filling your

basket/trolley, do you stop and look at what’s in your items?

Where have they come from? Was someone exploited to produce it?

Is the production of the item energy expensive? Has it generated any

pollution during its production? Did animals suffer poor living conditions

to produce it?  I could go on.

FOOD MILES

Fruit and vegetables shipped thousands of miles around the world

(usually under refrigeration) is vastly damaging to the earth.

If you want to eat more sustainably, locally produced, seasonal fruit

and veg is better.  You can get it at farm shops, farmers markets, and

veg box schemes. Or you could grow it yourself.

Meat bought from your local butcher, means that the meat is fresher

and more local.  Cheap meat in the supermarket and NOT

MARKED BRITISH, is usually imported meat and probably reared

in vast cattle enclosures, leading to deforestation.

Why not cut down your meat consumption and have a vegetarian

meal more often?  Or add more beans and reduce the meat in your

casserole?  There are lots of things you can do.

We humans are an adaptable lot, so it’s over to you!
