Service Notes 1st November

ALL SAINTS SERVICE AT THE MISSION

Good evening everyone and welcome to our monthly Communion Service. Blessings also to everyone who is joining us in thought and prayer. Just like family, we don’t have to see each other to belong to one another. Today is All Saints Day when we remember those who are in God’s nearer presence. Loved ones never die because they remain forever real and alive in our hearts and minds. Every time we meet for worship, they are with us because, as St Paul wrote, “each time we gather, we are surrounded by a great multitude of witnesses.”

We begin now by saying together, The Lord’s Prayer.

THE LORD’S PRAYER followed by OPENING PRAYER

Heavenly Father, we thank You that we are joined, as always, by a great cloud of witnesses whose love we share. Thank you that the bonds of love which unite us can never be broken for nothing can separate us from Your love. Bless our worship and remembrance this evening and in the sharing of Communion draw us ever closer to You, each other, and our loved ones who are in Your nearer presence.

We remember now those ties that bind as we listen to the chorus “Bind Us Together.”

BIBLE READING: Revelation 7: 9-end (music plays quietly in background)

You often find that there’s more truth spoken in a single sentence than in a long speech or sermon. Well, this evening, we shall try, with God’s help, to achieve this. I am, of course, mindful also that it is getting colder and therefore the sermons shouldn’t be too long. Several nights ago I woke up in the middle of the night and wrote down the following one line sentences on the theme of Heaven & The Saints. I know that God is always awake whether day or night: I leave you to judge whether the same can be said of me!

(Music begins to play quietly in the background)

A saint is someone who wouldn’t recognise themselves as such:

a saint is someone made holy by God and not by their own efforts:

a saint is a good person who has battled with the selfishness within them:

A saint is someone who knows that they are far from holy:

a saint is a sinner who is willing to admit it:

a saint is a person willing to surrender their earthly life to God in exchange for an everlasting life with God:

Heaven is not populated by good people but by sinners who have been turned inside out

Give God the dross of your life and He will re-cycle it into gold.

Heaven is a place where everything that glitters really is gold!

It’s no coincidence that All Saints Day precedes Remembrance Sunday because sainthood is all about sacrifice.

The more you give your life to God, the more you will gain.

No one can know the goodness of God until they have confronted the bad within themselves.

There are no good people in Heaven, only whitewashed sinners.

You are not first called to holiness but to honesty.

If you really want to be holy, then stop trying so hard!

Prayer is love that goes beyond words.

Repentance is knowing that you’re not all you’re cracked up to be.

Heaven is Heaven because in Heaven there are no desires and therefore no expectations or disappointments.

The worst sinners definitely make the best saints!

Love is not a feeling but an act of will.

Heaven can never be overpopulated because God’s heart of love just goes on expanding.

God is good so that you don’t have to be.

Stop trying to find your own way to Heaven: allow yourself to be led there.

Heaven is like sunshine and rain creating beautiful rainbows: but you cannot have one without the other: God shines through our tears, the raindrops of our lives, to produce something beautiful.

Heaven and earth are much closer than you think.

Let’s now listen to the hymn….ANGEL VOICES EVER SINGING

FINAL ONE LINER BY SAINT THERSA OF AVILA:

LET NOTHING DISTURB YOU:

LET NOTHING FRIGHTEN YOU:

THOUGH ALL THINGS PASS, GOD DOES NOT CHANGE:

PATIENCE WINS ALL THINGS:

THOSE WHO POSSESS GOD LACK NOTHING FOR GOD ALONE SUFFICES:

AMEN
