Service notes 2nd August

MISSION 2nd AUGUST

Good evening everyone and welcome to our monthly Communion Service. As always, greetings and blessings to all those who cannot be with us and we look forward to seeing you here whenever you can join us. May God continue to bless you and keep you safe and sound.

One thing that we’ve been reminded of in recent times is that, as human beings, we’re far more vulnerable than we often think we are. Human ingenuity can only get us so far and beyond that we are dependent upon the mercy and grace of God whether we realise this or not. We live and move and have our being within the orbit of His love and purposes.

And so, following The Lord’s Prayer and opening prayer, we shall listen to the chorus, “Father, I place into Your hands the things that I can’t do.” And, as we listen, let’s take the opportunity of offering up to Him our lives both present and future.

THE LORD’S PRAYER AND OPENING PRAYER

BIBLE READING: READING FROM MATTHEW 26

One vital thing that Jesus does for us is that He gives each one of us direct access to God. If you and I were to phone Heaven, we would never be met with an answer phone message. You and I always have a direct link and one way that this link is experienced is through Communion.

And so, tonight, as you receive Communion, you are eating directly from the hands of God. Yes, it may be your hands that are holding the bread and the cup but never imagine for one moment that this is self-service because it’s God who is offering these things to you and this is what makes the difference between Communion and Holy Communion.

It is also holy because it reveals God’s intention. And God’s intention is that we should know Him as our loving heavenly Father and be at One with Him. Jesus did several things at that first Communion on Maundy Thursday: and I want you to do these things with me now as we prepare to receive from His hands at His table.

Firstly, He took the bread ( just look at this tiny piece of bread in your hand and remember all that it means): Jesus then gave thanks for this bread (let each one of us now quietly express our thanks to God for sending Jesus): Jesus then broke the bread just as His body was to be broken on the Cross: (let’s remember what this cost God): someone once told me that if you give someone a piece of bread then it can only feed that one person but if it’s broken then it can feed many. You and I are part of the many that have been fed by God over the centuries. Jesus then gave the bread and commanded us to remember Him and what His life and death and resurrection means to us.

And so now let us eat this bread and thank God as we listen to that lovely chorus ……..

SONG: “BROKEN FOR ME: BROKEN FOR YOU”

Afterwards, at the end of supper, Jesus took the cup. As always He gave thanks. (Let’s remember that Jesus was actually giving thanks for the privilege of suffering: how many of us would give thanks in that same situation?) And He said “This is my blood of the New Covenant which is shed for each one of us for the forgiveness of sins.” The New Covenant means a new relationship with God: no longer based on fear and guilt but on fellowship and forgiveness.

Let us now remember this as we drink from the cup, thanking God for our new relationship with Him.

We shall listen to the chorus…..
