ECO-CHURCH NEWS
The season of excessive consumption is upon us! Christmas
wasn’t always about excessive consumption – we have the
Victorians to thank for modern Christmas traditions. In the
past Christmas was a time of Advent (waiting) and
Celebration of Christ’s Birth.
Eco-church has some tips to make the season less wasteful.
1. Give with purpose, chose handmade, local or meaningful gifts that do
good.
2. Wrap reuseable – skip glitter paper! Use brown paper, old maps, or
fabric wraps tied with twine.
3. Shop small, shop local – fewer miles, more community.
4. Regift or repair – a loved book or mended item can mean more.
5. Think creation in every choice – the best gift might be one that helps
nature flourish.
6. Scout around your garden for natural Christmas decorations – holly,
ivy, berries, leaves of shrubs, etc. Use natural beeswax candles. No
tinsel. Up-cycle jars, fabrics, ribbons, etc. Use LED Christmas lights.
7. Pick a FSC-certified or rent a Christmas tree (I think Roots at
Rushwick does this).
A greener Christmas means a more hopeful world.
